New Questions for a New World!

We are at the beginning of a very exciting time in our history as human BEings and inhabitants of this planet. I recently watched the John Adams miniseries and was inspired by what our forefathers risked to create their version of peace and freedom. The issues they faced in developing our nation (war, communications with other countries, economy, healthcare, etc.) are surprisingly familiar to our issues today. We are currently experiencing the pains of the old strategies breaking down and the struggle to find the new ways in this New World. To some of us the answers may seem obvious, to some it may seem bleak and hopeless, and others want to hang on tight to the familiar (even if it is painful and no matter what the cost).

Just as our forefathers had their our version of these struggles and decided to “BE the change” and create this country we now call, The United States of America, we have an opportunity to begin this new year with new leadership and create our “New World”. It is not up to President Obama and his administration to do this alone. As he said in his acceptance speech, “we all have a lot of work to do”. We are all a part of the new leadership. So, here’s a question to ask yourself – “How can I “BE the change” and mindfully create ”change we believe in”?

First, we must ask questions that open the dialogue and come from a mindset of what is possible, such as “What is the need/value at the heart of this issue? For example, ”What are the needs/values at the heart of our economy at this moment in time?” and “What is the purpose of this thing we call the economy?” Until we know the answer to these questions, can we really explore all the possibilities of HOW we will DO it? Let’s say the needs/values are balance, equanimity, and a system for exchanging and measuring resources that addresses everyone in our country AND the global economy. There are an infinite number of strategies to address these values. This is the place to begin our discussions. We need to shift our focus from pointing fingers “He said/She said”, assumptions “We can’t do that.”, or bailouts/quick fixes “We have to do this or that.” to understanding what is at the core of these issues by asking “What is it we really need/value?” and “For the sake of what?” By answering these questions first - and then, knowing and believing “Yes we can” is the first important step on the bridge to our New World. The only way to move forward is to learn from the past and leave it behind, gather the knowledge of where we are right now, consider the future (locally and globally), and then make conscious actions.
